James Morrison & Deni Hines : NOV 10 (sold out) & NOV 11

James Morrison & Deni Hines

We welcome to Live at the Quarry Australian multi-Instrumentalist, a guest performer with the world's most prestigious symphony orchestras and national radio bands: James Morrison. He has become a world jazz legend in his own lifetime; is yet to turn 50; and is idolized by fans in more countries than most people can name. Morrison regularly gives live performances and has co-performed and co-recorded over the last 23 years with many of the world's truly great jazz personalities and is respected by all of them for his talent.

Never one to rest on her laurels and always up for a new challenge, Deni Hines made a call to Australian and International Jazz maestro, James Morrison.  A meeting two days later at the Hilton Hotel, Sydney airport and the album “The Other Woman” was formalised and recording dates set.  Released in August 2007, the album hit the top of the Australian Jazz Charts and Top 30 on the digital charts.

Boom Crash Opera with Sean Kelly (The Models) : NOV 17

Boom Crash Opera with Sean Kelly (The Models)

Boom Crash Opera formed in Melbourne in 1985.  Initially based around the songwriting partnership of Richard Pleasance (guitar/bass/vocals 1985 - 1992) and Peter Farnan  (guitar/bass/keys/vocals), Boom Crash Opera is now comprised of Dale Ryder (lead  vocals), Peter 'Maz' Maslen (drums/vocals), Greg O'Connor (keyboards/guitar) and Ian Tilley (bass/vocals 1992- present). Boom Crash Opera have always had a transparent recognition of their influences and none greater than Models front man Sean Kelly, a man they have many times, attempted to musically clone.

Sean Kelly is simply Australian Rock & Roll royalty. Fittingly, in 2010, Sean was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame for his work with Models, Absent Friends and The Dukes. For fans of Boom Crash Opera and Sean Kelly ‐ a night at the picturesque Quarry Amphitheatre filled with entertaining and influential Australian music is not to be missed. Their 25th anniversary tour, 25 Years, is a two hour show with both acoustic and electric performances by Boom Crash Opera featuring all their favourite songs including: Onion Skin, Dancing in the Storm, Great Wall, The Best Thing, and Hands Up in the Air. Not to mention with a few classic album gems thrown in the mix, as well as an inspirational set from their musical mentor Sean Kelly.

The Black Sorrows and Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks : DEC 14 (sold out) & DEC 15

The Black Sorrows and Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks

Joe Camilleri is an icon of Australian music. He has paved the way for four generations of singers and songwriters, writing and recording an enormous catalogue of incredible music over his astonishing 46 year career. In the mid ‘80s following the success of his first band, Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons, Camilleri gathered together a group of musician friends and dubbed them The Black Sorrows. Today The Black Sorrows are Joe Creighton on bass, Tony Floyd on drums, Claude Carranza on guitar and Atlanta Coogan on Vocals.

Ross Wilson is one of Australia’s rock idols, and realistically is incapable of making a come back, as he has never been far from the forefront of Australian rock music. Having been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame as himself, and as a member of the award winning band Daddy Cool, Wilson is a live sensation not to be missed. In order to promote his first solo single, Living in the Land of Oz, Wilson formed Mondo Rock, however after 2 years the project took on a life of its own, experiencing mainstream success until their split in 1990. Ross Wilson has become one of the very few, if not the only, Australian rock legend with a career spanning back to the 1960’s, and still able to generate commercial radio airplay with new original songs in the 21st century.

If you make it down to their Quarry show you'll be lucky enough to see all 12 musicians on stage, when The Black Sorrows and Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks come together for a grand encore!

Tim Rogers & Abbe May : DEC 13

Tim Rogers & Abbe May

Tim Rogers formed You Am I with his school friend Nick Tischler and his own older brother Jaimme Rogers in 1989, though the line-up shifted around early on, settling on Andy Kent on bass and Mark Tunaley on drums. After the recording of their first album, Sound As Ever, Tunaley was asked to leave the band and Russell Hopkinson joined, forming the 'classic' You Am I line-up, winning high praise for their excellent Hi Fi Way, Hourly Daily and #4 Record albums. Second guitarist Davey Lane - initially part of The Twin Set touring band - joined in 1999. Also in 1999, Tim released his first solo album, What Rhymes With Cars And Girls. He won an ARIA award for Best Male Artist for the album. The initial release of You Am I's fifth album, Dress Me Slowly also contained a bonus disc entitled The Temperance Union EP, consisting of 8 songs Tim had recorded and written, mostly solo. He took the name of the EP - based loosely on the Woman's Christian Temperance Union - to name his backing band for his subsequent solo albums, starting with Spit Polish in 2004. 2005 saw the release of a Temperance Union double album, Dirty Ron/Ghost Songs, featuring various special guests including Missy Higgins, Donna Simpson and Rebecca Barnard. In September 2007 he released his fourth solo album, The Luxury Of Hysteria, his first credited solely to his name (though The Temperance Union do play on the album). Tim Rogers is an instantly recognisable name and has earned critical acclaim for his unique Australian songwriting and has endeared himself to a whole generation.

ABBE MAY

Abbe May spent her late teens and early twenties in Australia’s sleaziest rock venues, busted up studios and unreliable tour vans in various solo and band incarnations. With sly humour, Abbe has graduated from her critically acclaimed early explorations of rock and blues, to become a guitar slinging goddess with an atmospheric cocktail of sexy indie riff-rock, psychedelia and blues.

Abbe’s new album ‘Design Desire’ was released in July 2011 to universal acclaim and also enjoyed feverish global radio support for the singles ‘Mammalian Locomotion’, ‘Taurus Chorus’ and title track ‘Design Desire’. TV has also fea- tured numerous successful programme syncs, including the online stir caused by the very popular inclusion of ‘Mammalian Locomotion’ as the closing track on a recent episode of the hit series ‘Entourage’.

Beth Orton : JAN 24 & 25 (SOLD OUT) & JAN 26

Beth Orton

Elizabeth Caroline Orton, commonly known as Beth Orton, is a BRIT Award–winning English singer-songwriter. Known for her "folktronica" sound, which mixes elements of folk and electronica, she was initially recognised for her collaborations with William Orbit and the Chemical Brothers in the mid 1990s — but these were not Orton's first recordings. She released a solo album, Superpinkymandy, in 1993. Her second solo album, Trailer Park, garnered much critical acclaim in 1996. With the release of the albums Central Reservation (1999) and the 2002 UK top 10 album Daybreaker, Beth developed a devoted fan base. On her 2006 release, Comfort of Strangers, she moved towards a more folk based sound and away from the electronic sound of past albums. All of her recent releases are "carbon neutral", whereby a tree is planted in a poor area of Mexico for every certain amount of units produced, to offset the emissions generated when pressing the CDs and other marketing paraphernalia. Orton has left her longtime record label and will begin work on a follow up album to Comfort Of Strangers which will be released sometime in 2011 on ANTI-. Some new material has been written and performed already.

JAN 24 & 25 - SAM AMIDON (US)

Sam Amidon was born and raised in Brattleboro, Vermont by folk musicians Peter and Mary Alice Amidon. He has released three albums of radically re-worked folksongs: "But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted," recorded at his then-home of Harlem in 2006 with Thomas Bartlett; followed by "All Is Well" in 2008 and "I See The Sign" in 2010, both recorded in Iceland with producer Valgeir Sigurðsson.

Sam's folksong albums have received wide acclaim and have pulled many a soul back from the brink... his itinerant wanderings have taken him to far-off lands... and his solo performances have taken on a life and tenor of their own.  Sam's drawn comics and enigmatic home-made videos, the "self-inflicted field recordings" resulting from these internal and external journeys, have resulted in exhibitions at the Tony Shafrazi and Audio Visual Arts galleries in New York City, and the Gallery Kuhturm in Leipzig.  His audio-visual show/comics lecture "Home Alone Inside My Head" was premiered at NYC's The Kitchen in November 2010.

JAN 26 - CATHERINE TRIACOS (Sydney)

Sydney based singer-songwriter Catherine Traicos offers up a beguiling blend of alt-country, blues, roots and folk, delivered by one of the most distinctive and beautiful voices in contemporary music.

Catherine’s ability to combine surprising arrangements, her gorgeously delicate smoky voice and brilliant live performances have seen her compared to everyone from Gillian Welch, Cat Power and Beth Orton to eels and Cowboy Junkies.

The Whitlams : JAN 27 & 28 (SOLD OUT) & JAN 29

The Whitlams

The Whitlams have released 6 albums and received ARIA Awards for Best Group, Best Song and Best Independent Release. The band was formed in 1992 and originally consisted of Tim Freedman (lead vocals, piano), Stevie Plunder (lead vocals, guitar) and Andy Lewis (double bass, backing vocals). The lineup has changed many times over the years with Tim the only consistent member of the band, not to mention the only original member still alive. The current lineup consists of Tim Freedman on piano and vocals, Jak Housden on guitar, Warwick Hornby on bass guitar and Terepai Richmond on drums. One of Australia's favourite bands, and groundbreaking Independent artists in this country, The Whitlams’ appeal reaches audiences of all ages and tastes. With lyrics described as having a “charming cynicism” and enhanced by an instinct for poignant melody, they won Best Group at the 1998 ARIA Awards, as well as Song of the Year and Best Independent Release for their 3rd album Eternal Nightcap. As if that wasn’t enough, who could forget them topping the triple j Hottest 100 in 1997 with No Aphrodisiac, holding off Blur’s Song 2, The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony, and, err, Chumbawamba! As a measure of their continued success, fifth album Torch The Moon debuted at Number 1 and became the third consecutive Whitlams album to go platinum. Now with a solo album out of the way, Tim Freedman returns to the Quarry with The Whitlams, where they sold out 3 consecutive nights in January 2009!

Diesel : MAR 16 (Sold out) & MAR 17 + 18 (On sale now!)

Diesel

25 years ago singer-guitarist Mark Lizotte (aka Diesel) finalised the line up for his band at that time in Perth, Johnny Diesel and the Injectors. Within a matter of months they were on their way across the Nullabor, stunning audiences live and heading for a national top 3 album chart debut. The band eventually folded, the “Johnny” disappeared, and Diesel reemerged releasing a string of gold and platinum albums and earned a swag of ARIA Awards (including Best Male).

He boasts ten Top 10 albums and more than a dozen Top 20 singles. And after 25 years, just when we thought we knew him, Diesel produces an album that defies all preconceptions. To celebrate his alter ego’s silver jubilee, Diesel has cut 15 tracks for his brand new album ‘Under The Influence’ — an album dedicated to his musical heroes.
